What To Expect With Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

George Christ

As you begin the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By bringing the treatments to your home, we can show you how different shutters, blinds, and shades would match up to your windows. Now you can make the perfect choice by understanding how different products looks in your own room.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how can bringing samples to your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Some companies may have a different agenda for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will get during your Sunburst visit.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

People looking at samples of window treatments.

Start by scheduling an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already have a shutter or window treatment in mind, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make a special note to show you some options for your preferred product. We will also show other options, so you can know that your room matches your vision.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and discuss what you want in a window treatment. We’ll spefically ask about your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also want to know how the room is used and what ambiance you want to attain. The end target is to imagine what your decor will ultimately look like with the coverings installed.

We might show you many different samples and compare each window treatment against each other. Most clients want to try out a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the best stain to match the walls. We’ll also show you all the options available for the shutter, shade, or blind, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once you make your pick, we’ll find percise measurements of your windows. We usually measure the windows throughout the house—even if you only need to fit treatments for some of your windows. We do this because most of our customers want to order future shutters or blinds with just a phone call. Before we leave, we will walk you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Signs Of A Bad In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will carry out compentent in-home consultation, there are some things you should never witness from any window treatment salesperson. As they say, the quality of your consultation experience reflects the quality of the window treatments.

First, your rep should be careful and professional. He or she should arrive on time, ready to present, and offer to cover their shoes with shoe booties. Your representative should always have product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

In regards to pricing, you should be given a complete written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, scribbled on a product brochure or the back of a business card. And don’t take pricing estimates without window measurement. You want to understand how much the final bill will cost you. If a quote ever seems too good to be true, please ask for references and look up the business’ online reviews.
